INTERNAL VENETIAN BLINDS

Venetian blinds consist of horizontal overlapping slats which are generally either made of aluminium or timber. The slats are suspended from a headrail and supported by ladder braid or ladder tape. Aluminium slats, for internal use, are available in 15mm, 25mm, 35mm and 50mm widths. Timber slats are available in 25mm and 50mm widths.

Types and operation

Micro blinds - a term used to describe aluminium slat venetian blinds using 15mm slat.

Mini blinds - a term used to describe aluminium or timber slat venetian blinds using 25mm wide slat. Timber slat is always plain but aluminium can be plain or perforated.

Dual control - dual control blinds have a cord to raise and lower the blind and either a cord or rod to tilt the slats.

Perforated - aluminium slat available in 25mm slat width. They provide sun screening protection without eliminating the external view.

TIMBER SLATTED BLINDS

Timber slatted blinds are one of the earliest forms of sun-screening that were developed from the timber shutters that covered window openings before the advent of glass. The modern blind dates back to the 18th century and is the original venetian blind.

As a natural material timber is subject to movement and for timber blinds it is only possible to use timbers that are stable in the form of narrow strips.

The timber used to make 25mm or 50mm natural and coloured slats is a medium grained hardwood known as ramin.
